I’ve been welding.
Made a plant base for the fat flower
latest step- wet sanding with drywall screen sandpaper, then wet dry sandpaper, down to 320 grit. Next will be wet sanding progressively down to 600. Then I’ll wax it.
Honestly, this piece has made itself.
new stone… white soapstone. I’ve done about 5 mins work on it, it pretty much came like you see it. I have to confess that I didn’t *see* it when I bought it, but noticed the shape only after I got it home. But I have to go with it, I mean, it’s a gimme, forchrissakes! two issues, though: It’s going to be more of a bas relief, I think I’ll pretty much leave the back and sides as they are, and the whammy- I’m working with a fault line, which means if I’m not careful…….
ed: did I say soapstone? Yeah, no I think it’s alabaster.
hand polished with paste wax
I think it’s finished. Good pics to come soon…
the outside has been sanded with 6 gradations of screenback and wet/dry sandpaper. Now all that is left is the polishing…..
3 hours later… it’s all about the process….
getting better, now to trim out the outside again. If you look carefully, you can see the intended cut lines.
By the way, in case I didn’t mention it before, this is (of course) happening in real time, and I do not work with power tools. The tools placed next to the piece are the ones primarily used for that step. I’m actually getting a lot out of viewing the piece this way, like looking at a work in a mirror, re-framing helps you see the thing as a whole…
so, here’s the thing…. I started to carve out the pistil and thought I would give it a little curvature or something… you know, just for the hell of it… ended up looking like nothing more (or less) than a flaccid penis lovingly presented on a head of lettuce.
not that there’s anything wrong with flaccid penises lovingly presented, mind you, just that this was not what I had in mind…. so I straightened it out. Now, it looks like a sea cucumber wrapped in a baby blanket.
obviously, I’m going through one of those “I hate it” phases….
4 more hours actual carving time
rasped the outer form, starting to carve the inner.
now it’s the touchy balance between removing enough material and not destroying the whole thing.
